Start with the wastewater
Industrial wastewater varies with the process that produces it. A treatment scheme therefore starts with the actual feed and the required destinations for recovered water and residuals. A generic flow diagram helps explain the stages; it does not establish a design.
ETP scope can include several treatment operations before the water reaches a membrane or thermal stage. Which operations are appropriate is a process-engineering decision.
UF and RO serve different roles
UF separates suspended particles and can prepare water for further treatment. RO addresses dissolved constituents and produces both a permeate stream and a more concentrated reject. Pretreatment is important to the reliability of a downstream membrane system.
Follow both streams on the drawing. The reuse destination needs suitable water quality, and the reject needs an identified treatment or management route.
Thermal stages handle the remaining concentrate
Evaporation removes more water from concentrated streams. Depending on the approved scheme, crystallisation or drying may then produce the final residual. ZLD describes the overall liquid-discharge outcome, rather than the presence of one particular machine.
Condensate also needs a defined destination. Recovered water is not automatically suitable for every process, and solids still require an appropriate handling and disposal plan.
Build the interfaces into the scope
For execution planning, identify every package boundary, transfer pump, pipe route, utility connection and access structure. Assign responsibility for each item, and agree which checks must precede commissioning support.
